Sommeliers can seem intimidating, but a few simple tactics will guarantee expert help and a great bottle of wine every time.
Make eye contact and ask for help; few people do, and sommeliers really appreciate it
Make your price range clear. Point to your preferred price and say 'I'm looking for a wine around this level' - the sommelier will understand
Ask if they can recommend an unusual or little-known wine. Sommeliers are proud of their knowledge (plus these wines can be great value)
Most sommeliers will ask what you're having to eat. Just name each person's main ingredient ('the salmon', 'the lamb'). If you want a different wine with your starter and main course, say so.
A good sommelier will make 2 or 3 suggestions. Simple questions will help you choose, e.g. 'which is driest?', 'which is fruitiest?'
If you're still unsure, try asking 'which is YOUR favourite?' You'll always get something good!
When it's time to taste the wine, don't panic! If it doesn't taste nice, then say so. A good sommelier will change it, whether it's faulty or not.
